I think he might begin to get seriously involved with these other lives, over and above paying attention to his own, and then, when he reaches a point of final obsession, he discovers that these other people's lives are entirely in his imagination. They do not exist.
The thrall and eventual realization of a life vicarously lived, no doubt.
